Reviewed by SelfTort  7/23/08 Love the distinctive vocals on this. Has a presence that reminds me a tad of David Byrne. Very quirky piece of music that really works for me. Love the way you throw yourself into it Beau. Really like the mix of instrumentation in the intro. The drop back to bass, guitar and drums behind the vocals works well with the guitars and other instruments (there's quite a bit happening) dropping in intermittently. IMHO the vocals may have been recorded just a tad too loud. There's just a hint of distortion when you really get going. It might also be worth looking at maybe dropping the vocals back in the mix a bit. They are pretty dominating and there's some really nice things happening in the backing track that are maybe getting a little lost. But those are minot quibbles. It's a great track. The 3:11 change into the ending could never have been expected. Congrats on a great piece of work. Cheers Brian BTW. Mike's shows are great listening and fun. I hear the Morrissey influence (a compliment--he's among my favorites as I mention on my page). This a quite a complex composition, with the contrapuntal harmonies contributing both rhythmically and melodically. I'm very impressed by the painstaking structure. The chord transitions are very nice, and the bouncy keyboard and highly kinetic percussion create an ironic atmosphere appropriate to your subject matter. A witty, ambitious, provocative song. Very nicely done.
You might find this quote interesting in connection with your subject:
”Inasmuch as we have words to describe medicine as a healing art,
but have none to describe it as a method of social control or political rule, we must first give it a name. I propose that we call it pharmacracy, from the Greek roots pharmakon, for ‘medicine' or ‘drug,' and kratein, for ‘to rule' or ‘to control.' ... As theocracy is rule by God or priests, and democracy is rule by the people or the majority, so pharmacracy is rule by medicine or physicians”

I for one was not disappointed to see the 80s disappear. But this track really grabbed me. I think the trouble with New Wave was that it was overtaken by a mob of clones more concerned with hairstyle than music. So that what initially was interesting and different became too formulaic and plastic.
You guys avoid that. This is really clever, and damn catchy as all get out. The intro chord changes are a bit "formulaic" but you add enough external variation for that not to be a concern. Vocals seem a bit low in the early stages for me. The kick is overpowering them. Which is a pity because the vocals are really good and the phrasing of the lyrics has its own rhythmic quality. Like the call back vocals in the bridge and the harmonies in the chorus. With more like this I might have to review my prejudices about this era of music. Really good work.....but please bring up the early vocals.

Its produced really well and has some really infectiuos touches goin through it.
Not sure about the vocals though seem too cloud the "whole" rather than add....

Like that mysterious image on the right. A bit ambiguous; which adds to the suspense that this music has. Most danceable stuff. Cool injections of synth sounds make for interest. Your vocals are quite vibrant but your range is a bit limited. Expressive though is more important.
Good production. Like the percussion and strange shufflng sounds to add to this mood.
Great! Keep at it.

Damn...takes me weeks to complete a tune and sometimes it still sounds bad to me LOL
Certainly is Indie but i would class this as experimental as its moving in pyschotic directions :-)
Vocal FX are cool...and the synth organ sounds ok too...very hard to use a synth organ without making it sound too cheesy but you worked it well here and the change at 1:50 reminds me of the old SKA days from the early `80s.
Enjoyed geez...

You certainly have a very own and original style. And I like to hear it. But I think it could be produced more tight.
Well done this song.

Nice sounds on this; like the vibes -the vocals area tad off but still full of expression.
The drumming could be more full sounding. A well arranged tune. Could use a remix
for the sounds seem to be off balance to my ear. Like the bass seems to be in the right placement.
The guitar is tryingb to compliment the vocals. A little short.
Not too bad -lot of potential.

Another lovely piece of quirky invention. Your music is very distinctive but is still immediately accessible....even with the use of "mutilation" in the lyrics. Love your vocal work on this one. The phrasing of the lyrics is brilliant. Some nice rhythmic changes too. Musically a sweet waltz, but with a real sting in the lyrical tale (or tail) You've got a new fan. Cheers Brian
